Our Hometown Hero: Rocky Balboa

Considering our home turf is home to the famous training ground of the Italian Stallion it only seems appropriate to mention the Philadelphia’s greatest hero: Rocky Balboa.

In the world renowned film “Rocky”, Sylvester Stallone plays an underdog boxer with heart and talent. Rocky Balboa is on the hunt for something more, he needs to prove to himself and his city that he is more than just a low-life boxer living paycheck to paycheck. Balboa receives the chance of a lifetime when he is asked to fight Apollo Creed for the heavy- weight championship. Balboa salivates over the chance to fight Creed. With support from his love-interest and his relentless drive, Balboa trains daily to rise up to the test.

While this movie is certainly a standout, the character of Rocky Balboa is something that doesn’t leave anyone’s mind after seeing this film. Balboa is one of a kind. He is kind to all those he encounters. He looks out for his friends and he dignifies anyone he runs into. Balboa is a hard working athlete and doesn’t let anything get in his way of obtaining his goals. All the while, Balboa is never cocky. His confidence radiates off of his technique and sweaty sweatsuits, yet it never gives those around him a bad vibe. All in all, Rocky Balboa has heart. But his heart isn’t just for what happens in the ring, it is for everything that surrounds him- his city, Adrian, Paulie, training  and his turtles.

Rocky Balboa is the epitome of what every athlete should strive to be. To have confidence yet come off as humble. Never underestimate your opponent. Have passion for your sport. Love your friends and family. Strive to be better. Challenge yourself. And lastly,

When you doubt yourself, compete even harder and prove that doubt wrong.
